Confused about HLTAID011, HLTAID009, and HLTAID012? This guide explains the difference between each first aid course, which one your job requires, and why getting this right matters for employment and workplace compliance.
If your employer, job ad, or industry body has asked you to 'get your first aid certificate' and you've tried to research exactly what that means, you've probably ended up more confused than when you started. HLTAID009. HLTAID011. HLTAID012. Different course codes. Different durations. Different prices. Different validity periods. And no shortage of providers who would prefer you just book something and not ask too many questions.
Here is a clear, straight answer to the question most people should be asking before they book anything: which specific first aid qualification does your situation actually require?
HLTAID009: CPR only. 2–3 hours. Annual renewal. For roles where CPR refresher is required. Not a full first aid certificate.
HLTAID011: Provide First Aid. Half-day to full-day. Valid 3 years (CPR component renews annually). The standard workplace first aid qualification. Most employers mean this when they say 'get your first aid.'
HLTAID012: Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. Full-day. Valid 3 years. Mandatory for childcare workers and educators under the Education and Care Services National Law.
This is the CPR-only course. It covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use — the core skills for responding to cardiac arrest. The course takes 2–3 hours and must be renewed annually.
Who needs it? HLTAID009 is required as an annual renewal for anyone who already holds a full first aid certificate and needs to keep their CPR component current. It is also a condition of AHPRA registration for many healthcare professionals.
The critical thing to understand: if you do not already hold HLTAID011 (or the old HLTAID003) and someone tells you to 'get your CPR,' HLTAID009 alone does not satisfy a full first aid requirement. It covers one component of the broader qualification.
This is what most people mean when they say 'get your first aid certificate.' HLTAID011 is the nationally accredited unit of competency that covers the full range of emergency first aid skills you would be expected to use in a workplace setting.
Course content includes: the DRSABCD action plan, CPR and AED use, management of airway obstruction and choking, wound care and bleeding, burns treatment, fractures and musculoskeletal injuries, asthma attacks, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction), diabetic emergencies, seizures, shock management, and basic emergency response protocols.
The course is delivered in a half-day to full-day format, always including a face-to-face practical assessment — online-only delivery does not meet the requirement. Your certificate is valid for three years, with the CPR component requiring annual renewal through HLTAID009.
HLTAID012 is specifically designed for people who work with children in formal care and education settings. It extends beyond HLTAID011 to address the specific physiological needs of infants and children — because children are not simply small adults, and emergency management for a child differs meaningfully from adult first aid.
The course covers: all HLTAID011 content plus infant and child CPR techniques, management of common paediatric emergencies, asthma and anaphylaxis in children, appropriate communication with distressed children, and protocols specific to licensed care settings.
Importantly, HLTAID012 is mandatory — not optional — for at least one educator in childcare centres and education and care services under Regulation 136 of the Education and Care Services National Law. ACECQA (Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority) has required this since 2021.
If you are studying or working in childcare, early childhood education, or outside school hours care, HLTAID012 is the course you need — not HLTAID011, even though HLTAID011 is the standard for almost everything else.
Stella College (RTO 41290) delivers all three courses:
Each is a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued under RTO 41290 and accepted by employers across Australia.
HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue. The CPR component within both qualifications requires an annual renewal through HLTAID009. It is common for workers to book HLTAID009 annually and then return to do the full HLTAID011 renewal every three years.
Safe Work Australia and most industry bodies recommend keeping first aid certificates current rather than letting them lapse. Some employers — particularly high-risk workplaces and aged care providers — will not roster workers whose certificates have expired.
Stella College (RTO 41290) runs HLTAID009, HLTAID011, and HLTAID012 with flexible scheduling. All certificates are nationally recognised. Same-day digital Statement of Attainment on successful completion. Book your first aid course at stellacollege.edu.au
HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is the complete workplace first aid qualification — a half-day to full-day course covering CPR, AED use, bleeding, burns, fractures, anaphylaxis, asthma, and more. HLTAID009 (Provide CPR) is the CPR-only course, typically 2-3 hours, required as the annual renewal component of HLTAID011. Most employers mean HLTAID011 when they say 'get your first aid certificate.'
HLTAID011 is the standard first aid requirement for aged care workers. HLTAID012 is specifically required for people working in childcare and education and care settings. If you work in aged care but also support participants in a childcare adjacent setting, check with your employer which is appropriate — but for aged care specifically, HLTAID011 is the standard.
HLTAID011 is typically delivered over a half-day (approximately 4 hours) to a full day, depending on the provider and group size. The course must include a face-to-face practical assessment — online-only completion does not meet the requirement. Some providers offer a blended delivery where theory is completed online before the practical component.
HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue. The CPR component (HLTAID009) within these qualifications requires annual renewal. Most workers book their HLTAID009 renewal once a year and their full first aid renewal every three years. Some employers and industry bodies apply stricter renewal requirements — check your specific workplace or registration body.
Yes. Stella College delivers first aid courses as standalone short courses, open to anyone. Students enrolled in Certificate III in Individual Support may find that completing HLTAID011 during their study period means they arrive at work placement and employment with all pre-employment requirements already met.
